Chickpea Burgers with Caramalised Onion Filling

I have been settling into a new city and a new job in Bangalore for the last month now - looking fora place to stay and getting used to a new city is tougher than I imagined. The food scene had been pretty subdued actually. Eating out mostly (something I am not particarly proud of) - cooking accassionally for a few friends. I am seriously craving healthy food - mostly because of the favour I do to my conscience by keeping my days of indulgences to a limited few.

Here is another recipe that I am putting up – a healthy take on a generally not so healthy snack...the infamous burger.
This one is laden with proteins and is oh-so-delicious and moist at the same time.

Ingredients:

4 burger buns ( I used whole wheat)
200 gms chick peas (soaked and boiled with a bit of salt)
1 medium carrot shredded
1 medium onion finely chopped
Chopped coriander leaves
5-7 crushed garlic cloves
Salt
Pepper
1 tbs bread crumbs
Lettuce leaves
Sliced tomatoes
3 tbsp soya sauce
Caramalised onions (recipe below)

Caramalised Onion
4 – 5 medium onion sliced
1 tbs olive oil
1 tsp butter
Salt
1 tsp sugar

Heat the olive oil and butter in a pan on medium heat. Add the onion and stir. After around 10 minutes when the onions start browning add the salt and sugar. Continue to cook till the onions become brown and caramalised.
Once done, remove from heat and cool.

For the burger patty
Mash the boiled chickpeas and add all the ingredients to it. The carrot also helps to make the patty moist as well as adds a sweet and juicy taste to the patty.
Divide the mix into 4 parts.
Take a portion and flatten it. Fill with the caramalised onions and form a ball. Flatten a little to make it resemble a patty.
Repeat the process with the other patties.
Now heat some oil in a pan and cook the patties for around 5 minutes on each side till the patties are golden brown.
Now cut the burger, arrange the lettuce leaves, tomato slices and the patty on the burger and add a dash of the sauces of your choice.

Cheers to guilt free eating !!!

  1. Cool!!! I think it would be a tasty delight as well as a burger with demerits removed....really liked the concept of introducing chickpeas in place of high calorie potato patty.
